Complete Transfer Process

Follow these steps to move JPEGmini from old computer to new:


Step 1: Deactivate on Old Computer

If old computer is accessible:

  1. Follow deactivation steps above (Mac or Windows)

  2. Wait for confirmation message

  3. ✅ Done! Activation slot is freed

If old computer is NOT accessible:

  • Skip to "Manual Reset" section below

  • We'll reset activations for you


Step 2: Download JPEGmini on New Computer

Option A: Use download link from email

  1. Find your original purchase confirmation email

  2. Click download link

  3. Download installer for your platform (Mac or Windows)

Option B: Download from website

Response time: Usually within 24 hours (often faster!)

After Reset

What happens to old computers:

  • Old activations are invalidated

  • If old computer is recovered later, it won't be activated

v3/v4: Full Cross-Platform Support

Good news: v3/v4 licenses work on both Mac and Windows!

You can:

  • Activate same code on Mac

  • Activate same code on Windows

  • Mix platforms across 3 computers

  • Transfer from Mac to Windows (or vice versa)

Example setups:

  • 2 Macs + 1 Windows = ✅ Valid

  • 1 Mac + 2 Windows = ✅ Valid

  • 3 Macs or 3 Windows = ✅ Valid


v2: Platform-Specific Licenses

Important: v2 licenses are platform-locked:

v2 Mac license: Mac only
v2 Windows license: Windows only

If you have v2 and want to switch platforms:

  • Option 1: Buy v2 license for other platform (full price)

  • Option 2: Upgrade to v3/v4 (cross-platform + new features)

Scenario: Moving from Mac to Windows (or vice versa)

  4. Activate with SAME code (the one from Mac)

Unfortunately, no. JPEGmini doesn't have a user dashboard showing:

  • How many activations are currently used

  • Which computers are activated

  • When each was activated

This is a known limitation we're working to improve.

What happens if I forget to deactivate before selling my computer?

Don't worry! This happens often. Here's what to do:

Step 1: Try to deactivate remotely

  • If you can still access the computer remotely

  • Or if buyer hasn't wiped it yet

Step 2: If that's not possible

Step 3: Activate on new computer

  • After reset, you can immediately activate on new devices

Important: We can't "force deactivate" a specific computer remotely. We reset ALL activations, so you'll need to reactivate any computers you're still using.


Can I temporarily deactivate during computer repairs?

Yes! Great idea to protect your activation:

Before repair:

  1. Deactivate JPEGmini (Help → Deactivate)

  2. Send computer for repair

  3. Your activation slot is freed

After repair:

  1. Get computer back

  2. Reactivate with same code

  3. ✅ Back to work!

Why this helps:

  • If repair shop wipes/reformats, your activation isn't stuck

  • If computer can't be repaired, you don't lose an activation slot

  • Peace of mind during repairs


Does deactivating delete my optimized photos?

No! Deactivation only affects the license:

What stays:

  • All your optimized photos

  • Original files

  • JPEGmini settings/preferences

What changes:

  • JPEGmini requires reactivation to run

Can I activate on a virtual machine (VM)?

Each VM counts as a separate computer:

  • VM 1 = 1 activation

  • VM 2 = 1 activation

  • Physical computer = 1 activation

  • Total: 3 activations (your limit)

  • Mac physical: 1 activation

  • Parallels Windows VM: 1 activation

  • Remote desktop: 1 activation

  • = All 3 slots used

Best practice:

  • Use JPEGmini on host computer, not VMs

What if I upgrade my computer (new hard drive, etc.)?

It depends on what you upgrade:

Scenario A: Same computer, new hard drive/OS

  • After upgrade, reinstall JPEGmini

Does transferring licenses affect my license expiration date?

No! Transfer doesn't change expiration:

Stays the same:

  • Expiration date unchanged

  • Remaining update period unchanged

  • Doesn't restart or extend
